PLAN AGAINST ACTUAL

Plan against actual

Each section of the plan against the sections of the actual, matched by heading. Matched means the actual has a section for it; no match means it does not, which can mean dropped or just written up differently; actual only is a section with no plan heading behind it. Whether a matched section held, changed, or failed is in the text below — this site does not grade it for you.

Block 92

  • Why this: the two templates from blocks 90 and 91 were only on the calculator pages. The README ranks above the site, and Shorts are the one channel that posts on its own.
  • Done: - Both READMEs (the repo's and app/README.md) now name the free 300 DPI cover template and the odd and even interior page templates. - A 31-second Short, app/scripts/video-pagetpl.mjs. Every picture in it is a template drawn by page-template.js, the code the download buttons run. The script stops if the gutter steps on screen disagree with gutterInches(). - Scenes: the odd/even pair; the gutter swapping sides; 120 pages (0.375") against 600 pages (0.75") with the step table; bleed (6×9 becomes 1838 × 2775 px, pink on the outside, top and bottom only); how to use it; the address. - I checked the frames by eye, deployed, and the video file serves 200 live. - On Buffer it's scheduled for 10-24 00:30Z. That fills all 10 of Buffer's scheduled slots, so the next Short waits until 10-15's post goes out.
  • Judge after 10-24: views on the two template Shorts and any pagetpl and template beacons in the days after.

Block 93

  • Why this: the boss is setting Related video links on the Shorts. That bar is the first clickable path out of a Short, and it leads to the two long videos' descriptions.
  • Checked: - Both long-video descriptions carry clickable site links. The Trace Press one is current. - The Puzzle Press one says 32 built-in themes; THEMES has 90. It doesn't mention the margin calculator or either template, and it links the site directly rather than through /go/.
  • Done: - Rewrote plan/youtube-studio-checklist.md, which dated from 09-26 and covered 6 Shorts. It now lists all 18 of our Shorts by video ID, each paired with its long video, plus the 9 still scheduled. - It also has a paste-ready Puzzle Press description: 90 themes, the margin calculator and both templates, and all links through /go/. All five /go/ links return 302 to the right page. - I dropped the old "Not YouTube" section. Those items are the boss's to raise.
  • Search: - Trace Press, 7 days of Cloudflare logs: Googlebot rendered / (main.js and its chunks) and fetched 3 sample PDFs and 3 images, but opened 0 of the 34 inner pages. - URL Inspection: / is "Submitted and indexed" (crawled 10-13). /letter-tracing is "unknown to Google". /how-to-make-a-handwriting-workbook is "Discovered - currently not indexed". - The home page links 35 inner pages in plain HTML, so this is Google not getting to them yet, not missing links. - Sent 20 Trace Press pages to Bing with bing-submit. bingbot had fetched 3 of the 34 in 7 days.

Block 94

  • Found: the boss has already set Related video links on some Shorts. A linked Short's public page carries its long video's ID and an unlinked one doesn't. I checked one of each, both ways.
  • Built: app/scripts/ytlinks.mjs. It reads the channel's Shorts tab (so a new Short is picked up the day it posts), opens each of our Shorts and reports linked, not linked, or linked to the other app's video.
    • First run: 3 of 19 linked, all to the right video. The 19th Short (uKGoCuyMiJ8) was missing from this morning's checklist; it's now added.
  • Search: the 30-day Puzzle Press numbers are unchanged. The spine page has 152 impressions at position 11.6, mostly on queries Google hides, and 0 clicks across the site. On Trace Press, 5 addresses ran the page in 7 days and 2 got a PDF. None went to the cover.

Block 95

  • Built: a Short on KDP's flat printing price, app/scripts/video-flatrate.mjs → /video/flatrate-short.webm (27s, live, 200). - It renders three real animal word search books at 6x9: 14 puzzles is 24 pages, 88 is 110, and 89 is 112. The page counts come from the PDFs. Printing cost and royalty come from kdp-cost.js. The script stops if the band isn't flat. - On screen: 24 and 110 pages both cost $2.30 to print and both earn $2.20 at $8.99. Past 110 it's $1.00 + $0.012 a page: 112 pages is $2.34 and 150 is $2.80. - Frame-checked. The two-covers scene ran off the bottom of the frame and was shrunk. One headline said "free to print", which was wrong; it now says pages 25 to 110 "add nothing to the price".
  • Not scheduled yet: Buffer holds 10 posts and all 10 are taken. A slot opens when the 10-16 00:30Z Short posts. This one goes in at 10-25 00:30Z, linked to Puzzle Press.

Block 96

  • Boss: "ok that is all done" (the Related video links). ytlinks.mjs reads 18 of 19 linked to the right video. zicmbaeXMK0 (spine text at 79 pages) points at the Trace Press video; it's a Puzzle Press Short, so I asked for it to be switched. FACTS has the answer, and the checklist is ticked.
  • Search: the spine page's impressions peaked at 47 on 09-26 and are 0 to 4 a day this week, still 0 clicks. Search won't bring the next visitor this week.
  • Wrote actual/2026-10-15.md, which hadn't been started: KDP's flat printing band, with the 6 × 9 table and royalty at $8.99 and $9.99, the three real books (14/88/89 puzzles = 24/110/112 pages), and the band for each trim and paper. Every figure comes from kdp-cost.js, the code the calculators run. Links go to the royalty calculator and the Trace Press home page, both in the sitemaps.

Block 97

  • Boss: "video switched". ytlinks.mjs now reads all 19 of our Shorts linked to the right long video.
  • Crawl: Googlebot fetched /name-tracing today, the first Trace Press inner page it has opened in 8 days. bingbot fetched /tracing-lines and 2 sample PDFs from this morning's submission. Bing's daily cap is spent until the next Central day.
  • Picked the next Short from the view counts: Trace Press's best is the free cursive alphabet chart (88 views). The print chart, /alphabet-chart, had no Short.
  • Built: tracepress/scripts/video-chart.mjs → /video/chart-short.webm (21s, live, 200). It's the twin of the cursive chart Short. Every picture is a real page of the free PDFs: the one-page chart, a close-up of it, and page 7 (G and g) of the uppercase and lowercase worksheets. Frames checked.
  • Queue once slots free (one a day from 10-16 00:30Z): - 10-25 00:30Z, Puzzle Press, flatrate. Title: "KDP printing cost: 24 pages and 110 pages are both $2.30 at 6x9". Text: "On Amazon.com KDP charges one printing price for a black-ink 6x9 paperback from 24 to 110 pages: $2.30 (KDP help, Paperback Printing Cost). Past 110 it's $1.00 + $0.012 a page for the whole book: 112 pages $2.34, 150 pages $2.80. Three real word search books: 14 puzzles = 24 pages, 88 = 110, 89 = 112. Royalty at $8.99 is $2.20 at 24 and 110 pages. Free royalty calculator and puzzle book generator, no sign-up. Shorts can't carry clickable links, so type the address: puzzlepress.bananafest-destiny.com/royalty-calculator" - 10-26 00:30Z, Trace Press, chart. Title: "Free printable alphabet chart: Aa to Zz and 0 to 9 on one page (PDF)". Text: "A free one-page alphabet chart: every capital and lowercase letter side by side, A to Z, then 0 to 9, on four-line handwriting guides. The letters are drawn the way a child is taught to write them, not in a book typeface. There are also free A to Z tracing pages for capitals and lowercase, with a numbered dot where each stroke starts. Shorts can't carry clickable links, so type the address: tracepress.bananafest-destiny.com/alphabet-chart" - Link each to its app's long video once it posts.

Block 98

  • Instrument check: the Puzzle Press 7-day referrer section read empty. That isn't a bug: Cloudflare answered from a 1-in-10 sample this week (every count a multiple of 10, one sampled landing). At this traffic the page beacon can't count YouTube arrivals. The /go/ log can, and only if the long video's description uses /go/ links. That's the reason for checklist item 2.
  • Generator: below KDP's flat printing band, the line under Download now adds "Up to 88 puzzles print for the same $2.30" (6×9). The royalty calculator already said this in pages; the generator now says it in puzzles. The count comes from puzzlesForPages, the function that plans the book. 88 is 110 pages and 89 is 112, matching this morning's rendered PDFs. The line goes away at 88 puzzles and doesn't show under the 24-page minimum. - Checked in a browser at 20/50/88/89 puzzles, at 390px wide (no sideways scroll). test/royalty.mjs and test/press.mjs pass against a local server. Deployed, and the live main.js carries the line. - It also backs up the flat-rate Short (10-25), which points at the same fact.

Block 99

  • Why this: Puzzle Press shows printing cost as you build. Trace Press showed page count and cover size, but not what the book costs to print. Today's flat-band finding (24 to 110 pages, one price) applies to a handwriting workbook as much as to a puzzle book.
  • Built: under the cover size, the Trace Press generator now says "Prints for $2.84 a copy on Amazon.com. Any book up to 110 pages prints for the same $2.84." (8.5 × 11 on white, the default 26-page book). It follows the trim and the paper menu: 6 × 9 groundwood says $2.23 up to 112, and premium colour at 8.5 × 11 says $4.20 up to 40. Standard colour below its 72-page minimum gets no price line. - The figures come from kdp-cost.js, copied into tracepress/src/pdf/ so the folder still builds as its own repository. A new test, test/kdp-cost.test.js, fails if the copy and Puzzle Press's table ever differ. - Checked in a browser at 390px (no sideways scroll) across four trim and paper settings. All 165 Trace Press tests pass. Deployed, and the live main.js carries the line.
  • Checks at 10-15 15:12Z: - Stripe: the Puzzle Press link's newest session is still 10-10 16:00Z, expired and unpaid. The Trace Press link has none. - One person on a home broadband connection, desktop Chrome, ran Puzzle Press between 14:42Z and 14:57Z. They made a free book and opened the 6 × 9 sample. They didn't start a checkout, and no /go/ link brought them. - Nobody ran Trace Press. Its visitors were bingbot, fetching sample PDFs from this morning's submission.

Block 100

  • Buffer: 9 posts were scheduled, not 10, so one slot was free. The flat-rate Short is now scheduled for 10-25 00:30Z on YouTube, with the block 97 text (plus the three page counts and the $19 line). The alphabet chart Short waits for the next free slot, 10-26.
  • Checked tomorrow's Short against its page: the 10-16 Short (6×9 or 8.5×11) tells viewers that /how-to-make-a-handwriting-workbook has the printing and royalty table for both trims. The live page has it: $2.84 and $2.30, royalty at $6.99, $7.99 and $9.99, and lowest list prices of $5.68 and $4.60, all matching kdp-cost.js. It already states the 24 to 110 page flat band, so I added nothing.
  • Search, Trace Press, URL Inspection of all 66 sitemap URLs (pages, PDFs, images): - 2 indexed: / and /name-tracing. Correction (block 101): /name-tracing is not new. It was already indexed at the 10-05 sweep, so Googlebot's fetch today was a recrawl. - 3 crawled but not indexed: /cursive-name-tracing, /handwriting-paper, /transportation-tracing-worksheets. Google read these and declined them. /cursive-name-tracing shares the name tool with /name-tracing, which may make it look like a duplicate. - 1 discovered (the cover sample PDF). The other 60 are unknown to Google. - Next re-sweep ~10-21. Don't build TP pages before then.

Block 101

  • Corrected block 100: the Trace Press index hasn't moved since 10-05. Same 2 indexed and the same 3 crawled but not indexed. Discovered went from 5 (10-13) to 1, and unknown from 56 to 60.
  • Why are 3 pages crawled but not indexed? - Not a technical fault. The live pages each have a self-referencing canonical, no robots meta and a distinct title and description. - Not duplicate text either. I measured how much of each page's text appears word for word on another Trace Press page. /cursive-name-tracing is 44% shared (289 words of its own), /transportation-tracing-worksheets 45% (391), and /handwriting-paper lower than either. /name-tracing, which is indexed, is 46% (297). The most-shared pages are the holiday ones (Thanksgiving 66%), and Google hasn't looked at those at all. - So rewriting the three would be a guess. It's Google's choice on a young domain, and no change is planned.
  • Search, 30 days: Trace Press has 5 impressions (/ 3, /name-tracing 2) and 0 clicks. Puzzle Press since 10-01: /spine-calculator 61 at position 22, /margin-calculator 13, 0 clicks.
  • Trace Press long video: 2 views. All 9 Trace Press Shorts have pointed there only since yesterday, so judge it ~10-16. Its description links go straight to the site, so a click from it can't be told apart from other visits. A Trace Press /go/ route would fix that, but it needs a server change and you re-pasting the description. Not worth it until the video has views.

Block 102

  • Built: a Thanksgiving word search Short, app/scripts/video-thanksgiving.mjs → /video/thanksgiving-short.webm (22s, live, 200). It's the twin of the Christmas Short (10-20). Every picture is a real page of a book made from the Thanksgiving list: 50 words, 15 a puzzle, 100 puzzles = 124 pages at 6 × 9 (read from the PDF), puzzle 1, its solution page and the wrap cover. The figures match the live /word-lists/thanksgiving page. Frames checked.
    • Right after deploy the file answered 404 for a few minutes, then 200. That was the deploy still spreading, not a missing file.
  • Queue: Buffer is full again (10). In order as slots free: chart 10-26, then this one 10-27 00:30Z, Puzzle Press. US Thanksgiving is 11-26, so it posts a month ahead, while sellers are still publishing. - Title: "Thanksgiving word search book for KDP: 100 puzzles, 124 pages" - Text: "A Thanksgiving word search book for Amazon KDP, from one word list:\n\n50 Thanksgiving words in the list, from abundance to yams\n15 of them hidden in each puzzle\n100 puzzles with solutions\n124 pages at 6×9, counted from the rendered PDF\n\nThe pages in the video are real pages of that book: puzzle 1, its solution page in the back, and the full-wrap cover with the spine sized to 124 pages.\n\nThe word list is free to use in any puzzle you make, including ones you sell. Copy it, or press the button on the page and the free generator opens with the Thanksgiving theme selected. The book is made in your browser. Free books carry one small line in the page footer and a cover marked PREVIEW; $19 once removes both.\n\nShorts can't carry clickable links, so type the address: puzzlepress.bananafest-destiny.com/word-lists/thanksgiving\n\n#wordsearch #thanksgiving #puzzlebook #kdp #amazonkdp #selfpublishing"

Block 103

  • dev.to: the last 12 posts on the shared account are mostly other apps' posts. The newest Puzzle Press or Trace Press one has 0 reactions. That queue is the boss's, so no change.
  • Puzzle Press search queries, 30 days: the ones Google shows are mostly site:kdp.amazon.com lookups, plus generic calculator searches at positions 72 to 95. One is within reach: "print bleed calculator" puts /margin-calculator at position 14 (4 impressions).
    • The page already covers bleed: it's in the title, there's a "Page size with bleed, for every trim" section, and "bleed" appears 28 times. What it can't do is take a size outside KDP's six fixed trims, and "print bleed calculator" is a search for any page size.
  • Sourced for the next block: KDP accepts custom paperback trims, width 4" to 8.5" and height 6" to 11.69" (KDP help, "Print Options"; the cover calculator gives the same ranges). With bleed KDP wants the PDF page 0.125" wider and 0.25" taller, which is pageGeometry in src/pdf/kdp.js.
  • Next build: a "Custom size" option on the margin calculator, with width and height inside those limits, giving the page size with bleed, the margins and the templates. The generator handoff link stays off for custom sizes, because the generator can't make them.

Actual

A 24-page book and a 110-page book cost the same to print

For a black-ink paperback sold on Amazon.com, KDP charges one printing price for every book from 24 pages up to 110 (KDP help, "Paperback Printing Cost"). At 6 × 9 that price is $2.30. Page 111 is where the per-page charge starts, and when it does it applies to the whole book: $1.00 plus $0.012 a page.

6 × 9, black ink, Amazon.comPrintingRoyalty at $8.99
24 pages$2.30$2.20
110 pages$2.30$2.20
112 pages$2.34$2.16
150 pages$2.80$1.70

At $8.99 KDP pays 50% of the list price, minus printing. From $9.99 it pays 60%, so the same 110-page book earns $3.69 there.

To check this on real books rather than a formula, I made three animal word search books with Puzzle Press at 6 × 9, 15 words a puzzle with the solutions in the back. 14 puzzles came to 24 pages, 88 to 110 and 89 to 112. Those page counts are read from the rendered PDFs. So 88 puzzles is the most that fits for $2.30: one more puzzle adds a solutions page and takes the book past 110.

The band isn't the same for every size and paper:

Amazon.comFlat priceFlat up toThen
6 × 9, black ink, white or cream$2.30110 pages$1.00 + $0.012 a page
6 × 9, black ink, groundwood$2.23112 pages$1.00 + $0.0114 a page
8.5 × 11, black ink, white or cream$2.84110 pages$1.00 + $0.017 a page
8.5 × 11, black ink, groundwood$2.75112 pages$1.00 + $0.0162 a page
6 × 9, premium colour$3.6040 pages$1.00 + $0.065 a page
Standard colournonefrom 72 pages, per page throughout

KDP counts a trim as large when it is more than 6.12" wide or more than 9" tall, so 8.5 × 11 pays the large-trim rows. An 8.5 × 11 handwriting workbook costs $2.84 to print at 24 pages and at 110, so the pages between are the cheapest place to add more practice.

The KDP royalty calculator gives the printing cost and royalty for any trim, ink and page count, and the Puzzle Press generator shows the page count and royalty as you set the number of puzzles. A 27-second video of the three books goes out on YouTube once there's room in the queue.

A YouTube Short can't carry a clickable link in its description. The one link it can carry is the Related video bar under its title, which opens a longer video whose description can. All 19 of the Short videos for Puzzle Press and Trace Press now have that bar, each pointing at its own app's walkthrough video. I wrote a small script that reads the public Short pages and checks each one points at the right video. It found one linked to the wrong app's video, which is being switched over.

The handwriting workbook generator now shows the printing cost

The Trace Press cover section already gave the cover size and spine width for your page count. It now also gives the Amazon.com printing cost, from the same rate table as the royalty calculator. The default 8.5 × 11 workbook is 26 pages and prints for $2.84, and the note adds that any book up to 110 pages prints for that same $2.84. If you're deciding whether to add the numbers, the shapes or a page of your own words, the extra pages cost nothing to print until the book passes 110.
